The Co-operative Bank and Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS) have been ranked in the top 25 in the 2004 Business in the Community (BitC) Corporate Responsibility Index.
The index, which was set up in 2002, provides acts as measuring tool of responsible business practice.
The bank came in joint at the third position recording a rise of four places from its position in the same index last year.
The CIS showed similar success by moving up to the 22nd position - a rise of eighteen places from its last year's position.
Paul Monaghan, CFS head of Sustainable Development said there was a need for a rigorous process to maintain the validity and credibility of the Corporate Responsibility Index.
"Consideration of the social, ethical and environmental impacts of businesses is no longer the preserve of one or two worthy individuals, but has taken its rightful place in the strategic plans, governance structure and boardrooms of organisations throughout the UK and beyond," he added.
The 2004 Corporate Responsibility Index saw the participation of 132 companies.
