Millions of people are using credit cards for day-to-day purchases, according to a new survey.
Research by Post Office Credit Card found that 32 per cent of the population are putting everyday items such as groceries on plastic.
It also found that 45 per cent of people do not plan to pay off their credit card bill in full each month.
For this reason, Az Alibhai, Post Office head of lending, urged people to make sure they are on the best possible credit card deal .
"Given the current financial climate people should look to take advantage of any zero per cent features offered by providers, such as on balance transfers or new purchases," he said.
People who switch to a cheaper credit card deal will save a large amount of money in the long run, Mr Alibhai added.
Yesterday, Barclaycard announced that it is freezing its credit card rates for personal UK credit card holders until at least June.
